Positively Beaming believes in the true empowerment of women. This comes from economic equality, reproductive rights, freedom from fear plus, an equal voice and representation in politics, the workplace and in the home.

Empowerment, despite what Instagram tells us, does not come from the lipstick shade you choose, from bad-ass comments on your t-shirt or pole dancing n@ked (God forbid).

Empowerment comes from knowing that when you contribute at work, it won’t be clouded by the other persons bias about what it means to be a woman.

Equality will occur when women can be seen as both warm and competent as leaders. For men, the more competent they are, the more likable they appear. For women, the opposite is true. You only have to witness Julia Gillard, or more recently Julie Bishop, in Australian politics to see this play out. Two extremely competent women who were derided with insults of “witch”, “bitch”, “cold” and “barron”. Empowerment will occur when all women feel safe when going about their daily business. When they no longer have to ‘have a plan’ should some random male decide to assault them. It will truly occur when all women also feel safe in their own homes.

Importantly we will know that we have got it right when our boys become better men, good men. How they treat their mothers is how they will treat their girlfriends, wives and managers. We have to raise the expectations of our sons if we are to give our daughters the men/empowerment they deserve.
